BERNE – Russia’s Ilya Kovalchuk was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 IIHF World Championship.

The Directorate Awards were handed out to Best Goalie Andrei Mezin (Belarus), Best Defenceman Shea Weber (Canada), and Best Forward Ilya Kovalchuk.

The final tally for the media all-star team was also announced. The goalie is Andrei Mezin. On defence are Shea Weber and Kenny Jönsson (Sweden). The three forwards are Ilya Kovalchuk, Marty St. Louis (Canada), and Steve Stamkos (Canada).

With the 2009 World Championship over, no new names will be added to the Triple Gold Club.


The final attendance for the championship is 379,044 for the 56 games played in Kloten and Berne.
