Kazakhstan-Slovakia (1-0, 0-0, 0-1, 0-0, 0-1) ZURICH – Martina Velickova scored the game-winning goal in a shootout tonight to give Slovakia a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan and keep the Slovaks in the top pool for 2012 when the event will be played in Burlington, Vermont. Kazakhstan is relegated to Division I for 2012. Kazakhstan drew first blood when Galina Shu scored midway through the first period, but it wasn't until midway through the the third that Iveta Karafiatova tied the game for Slovakia. Five minutes of overtime settled nothing, giving Velickova, the second shooter for Slovakia, the chance to be hero in the game-winning shots contest. All three Kazakhs failed to beat goalie Zuzana Tomcikova, and as a result the Slovaks remain in the top division. Sweden-Switzerland (2-2, 0-0, 0-0, 0-0, 1-0) ZURICH – Elin Holmlöv scored the winning goal in the shootout to give Sweden a 3-2 win over Switzerland in the 5th-place game at Hallenstadion. Sweden finished the 13th World Women’s Championship with a record of three wins and two losses and a goal differential of 15-17 while Switzerland had a 2-3 record and 14-22 goals for and against mark. Oddly, only three games in the tournament have gone past regulation time, and the Swiss have been involved in all three. All of the game’s regulation-time goals this afternoon came in a busy first period. The Swedes took a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Emma Eliasson and Tina Enström in the first nine minutes, but the Swiss roared back with a pair of their own from Anja Stiefel and Nicole Bullo. After that, goalies Kim Martin (Sweden) and Florence Schelling were perfect. Over the last two periods there were ten minor penalties, seven to the Swedes, but neither power-play unit could score the go-ahead goal. ANDREW PODNIEKS
