Captain Tamara Grascher scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, jumping on a rebound following a shot from teammate Anna Meixner. “It’s a surprise to be in this position, we had to beat some good teams like Germany, and today we did it without getting many shots on net,” said Hummel. “Our goalie played awesome, she’s the heart of our defence and we’re proud to have her on our team.” Both teams came out strong in the first period, but an early turnover by Germany gave the puck to Austrian forward Julia Willenshofer. Willenshofer passed it up to Hummel, who’s first shot was saved by German goaltender Viola Hotter. Hotter though gave up the rebound and Hummel knocked it home with an impossible Ovechkin-like shot on her back for the 1-0 lead. Germany responded with a goal from captain Valerie Offermann as the puck came out in front from behind the net and onto her stick, beating Hotter with a shot to the top right corner.   Austria caught a break while on the penalty kill, when Meixner intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and took off for the net, passing it off to Willenshofer for the finish and the 2-1 lead. Germany tied the game again following a power play goal from Pia Szalowski, but Marchhart shut the door on the Germans after that. With three wins and no losses, the Austrians will be playing in the semi-final. They will have the chance to test themselves in their last preliminary round match Tuesday against Sweden, considered the heavy tournament favourite to win the gold. Germany will play Kazakhstan on Wednesday.

ADAM STEISS INNSBRUCK - Austria’s women’s hockey team has punched their ticket to the semi-finals with a 5-2 win over Germany. Goaltender Paula Camilla Marchhart made 29 saves and Victoria Hummel scored two goals in the victory.
