Russian forward Sergei Ogorodnikov passed away at the age of 32 years, it was reported by "Sport-Express" on Sunday night and confirmed by his club today. He reportedly died in a water scooter accident.

Ogorodnikov won gold at the 2004 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship and silver with the U20 team at the 2006 IIHF World Junior Championship with Russia’s class of 1986 led by Yevgeni Malkin. In 2004’s gold-medal win Ogorodnikov was Russia’s third goal scorer with three goals in the tournament behind Roman Voloshenko and Malkin. The same year the New York Islanders drafted him in the third round.

Ogorodnikov grew up in Irkutsk in Siberia before moving to Dynamo Moscow as a 15-year-old. After the successful year in 2004 he moved from Dynamo to city rival CSKA Moscow where he had his top-level debut in Russia. In 2006/2007 he tried it in the Islanders’ system and played games for the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the ECHL’s Pensacola Ice Pilots before returning to Russia for the following season.

For CSKA, Salavat Yulayev Ufa, Metallurg Novokuznetsk and Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg he played 133 games (6 goals, 12 assists) in Russia’s top league (KHL/Superliga) and many more in the second-tier VHL between 2012 and 2017. He also played three seasons for HK Gomel in the Belarusian Extraliga and spent last season with Podhale Nowy Targ in Poland as scoring leader of his team and second-best overall scorer of the Polish playoffs.
