ANKARA – Spanish champion FC Barcelona won the first round of the Continental Cup on Sunday in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

The team from Catalonia was undefeated in Group A with a 30-3 goal record.

After a lopsided 14-1 victory over Israel’s Herzliya Pituah, FC Barcelona felt the most pressure in its second game against Bulgarian champion, Slavia Sofia.

Serbian winger Aleksandar Kosic scored an early goal on the power-play at 3:19 and Jordi Bernet and Ramon Morer extended the lead midway through the game. Slavia’s lone goal at 49:48 from Martin Boyadjiev came too late.

After the 3-1 win over the Bulgarians, FC Barcelona sealed the tournament win with a 13-1 victory against the host team Polis Akademisi Ankara.

Slavia finished in second place after beating Polis Akademisi, 7-3, and Herzliya Pituah, 11-2. The Turks finished in third place thanks to an 8-3 victory against Herzliya Pituah.

FC Barcelona will now play in the second-round Group B, October 23-25, in Miercurea Ciuc, Romania, against SC Miercurea Ciuc, Ujpest Budapest (Hungary) and HYS The Hague (Netherlands).

Group C will be played on the same dates in Krakow, Poland, with Cracovia Krakow, Tallinn (Estonia), Energija Elektrenai (Lithuania) and Sary-Arka Karaganda (Kazakhstan).
