About the Hockey Forum

The IIHF organizes the 2012 Hockey Forum in Barcelona, Spain, 12-14 June. The event aims to involve all stakeholders in an open discussion on the current challenges facing European ice hockey.

The 2012 Hockey Forum is targeted to the stakeholders in today’s club hockey. It aims to involve all attendees in an open discussion on the current challenges primarily in European club ice hockey, but also how to involve the National Hockey League in an effort to grow the game.

The goal of the Hockey Forum is to find a common plan which shall lay the foundation for a competitively and commercially viable top European club competition.

The objective is to facilitate the integration of such a tournament into the existing national team schedules and jointly explore way for how the IIHF, the national associations, the leagues and the clubs can all be part of a reformed governance structure. Co-operation with the NHL and the NHLPA will also be a point on the agenda.

The decision to seize the momentum and plan a forum in the summer was taken after a hearing with the top-8 European leagues at the end of February.

“We felt that it is time to organize this unique event with all parties who feel they have a stake in ice hockey,” said IIHF President René Fasel. “We want to have an open discussion around some key issues, especially focused on Europe, and to find a common plan about how to go forward.”
