MUNICH – The German Ice Hockey Association goes new ways in naming the coaching staff for the U18 national team. The coaches of two of the most successful junior club teams of the country will share coaching duties and aim at getting the team back to the top division where it last played between 2011 and 2015.

Steffen Ziesche and Frank Fischoder will be the new coaches behind the German bench and replace Rick Bohm and Thomas Schadler after one year.

Berlin native Ziesche played in the top German league for Eisbaren Berlin, the Frankfurt Lions, Krefeld Pinguine and Kassel Huskies and for the German U20 national team. Since 2011 he has been coaching the junior team of Eisbaren Berlin in the top German junior league DNL. The 44-year-old also worked as a video coach for the men’s national team and last season as an assistant coach for the U20 national team.

“I’m very proud to be part of the realignment and it’s always an honour to be able to work for the German Ice Hockey Association. My assistant coach Frank Fischoder and I are highly motivated for the upcoming tasks,” Ziesche said.

For Fischoder it will be the first stint with a national selection. Also 44, the former minor pro player has normally been Fischoder’s opponent coaching the DNL team of Adler Mannheim, which he led to the third consecutive championship this year.

After missing out on promotion, Germany will play a second year in the Division I. At the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division I Group A, the team will aim at winning the tournament against Denmark, Kazakhstan, France, Norway and Hungary.
