Versatile Swiss Mark Streit, 31, has left Montreal. The power-play specialist who can play both defence and forward signed a $20.5-million, five-year deal with the New York Islanders on Tuesday, the day the NHL clubs could start signing free-agents.

Streit spent the last three seasons with the Montreal Canadiens and helped them develop one of the NHL's best power plays. In 205 NHL games with Montreal, he accumulated 25 goals and 109 points and he had a career season with 13 goals and 62 points in 81 games in 2007-2008.

Streit, who is the only Swiss skater playing regularly in the NHL, was the league’s best bargain last season at $600,000. He now gets a nice 580 per cent raise.

Other notable free-agent signings which included club changes:
  • Canadian defenceman Wade Redden (formerly Ottawa) signed with the New York Rangers.
  • Finnish forward Niklas Hagman (formerly Dallas) signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
  • American forward Brian Rolston (formerly Minnesota) signed with the New Jersey Devils, who re-acquired former Czech Bobby Holik.
  • Canadian defenceman Brian Campbell (formerly San José) signed with Chicago for a reported 7.14 million USD annual salary.
  • German goaltender Olaf Kolzig (formerly Washington) signed with Tampa Bay.
  • French goaltender Cristobal Huet (formerly Washington) signed with Chicago.
  • Czech forward Radim Vrbata (formerly Phoenix) signed with Tampa Bay.

In other transfer action which was not related to the July 1 free-agent regulation:
  • Mikkel Bodker, who became the highest drafted Danish player when Phoenix selected him 8th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, signed an entry-level contract with the Coyotes.
  • Phoenix also signed Russian Viktor Tikhonov (picked 28th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft) while New Jersey signed CSKA Moscow forward Vladimir Zharkov.
  • Carolina lured Russian defenceman Anton Babchuk from Avangard Omsk.
  • Colorado announced the signing of gritty forward Per Ledin from HV 71 Jonkoping, Sweden.

1. Players who have signed with NHL-clubs and transfer for 08-09.
2. Players who signed last year, but transfer for 08-09.
3. Players who have signed but will transfer to the NHL for 09-10
