MUNICH – Hans-Ulrich Esken announced his resignation as president of the German ice hockey association DEB on Friday, one day before the annual general assembly.

“My double function as a judge at the local court of Dortmund and as the president of the DEB was too heavy of a burden for me,” the 62-year-old said. “Also because of the serious disease I had two years ago, I decided to take this step due to health and personal reasons. The state of health hasn’t improved since then and I took the resignation into consideration already two years ago but I decided against it then. Now, I had to realise that my state of health doesn’t allow that much travelling anymore.”

Vice-president Uwe Harnos will take over Esken’s duties and lead the general assembly on Saturday. A new president will be elected later at a council meeting.
