BOBRUISK, Belarus – The Belarusian Cup is in Keramin Minsk’s hands thanks to a 6-5 win in overtime against city rival Yunost Minsk.
Keramin held a four-goal lead after just 15 minutes, but the game was not finished, as most people in the new Bobruisk Arena assumed. Yunost equalised the game at five thanks to two goals in the last minute of regulation, with the fifth goal coming three seconds before the buzzer.
However, Keramin won the game on an overtime goal by Estonian Toivo Suursoo in the 73rd minute. Keramin will play the “super final” against KHL team Dynamo Minsk on August 21 in Minsk.
Keramin Minsk also won the 2008 playoffs last spring and is qualified for the third round of the 2008-2009 IIHF Continental Cup.
Meanwhile, the schedule of the 14-team Belarusian Extraliga has been finalised. The league has ten teams from Belarus and the recently added four best clubs from the Latvian league. Included is Shinnik Bobruisk, the new team that was formed for the 7000-seat Bobruisk Arena which opened in June.
The teams for the 2008-2009 Belarusian Extraliga are: Keramin Minsk, Yunost Minsk, HK Vitebsk, Metallurg Zhlobin, Khimvolokno Mogilyov, Khimik-SKA Novopolotsk, Neman Grodno, HK Gomel, HK Brest, Shinnik Bobruisk, Riga 2000 (LAT), Liepajas Metalurgs (LAT), ASK Ogre (LAT), Latgale Daugavpils (LAT).
