Spaniards' Olympic hopes alive after win in Turkey

Spain won the tournament in Ankara and advances to the Olympic Pre-Qualification.

ANKARA, Turkey – The Spanish men’s national team advances in the Olympic Qualification winning an Olympic qualifying tournament.

Spain, 36th in the IIHF Work Ranking, easily beat Turkey (ranked 41st), 14-1, but then lost against 37th-ranked Mexico, 5-4. Spain took the lead four times including two goals by Pablo Muñoz but Brian Arroyo scored the game-winner for Mexico at 51:05.

ABut in the end, Mexico’s lost the tournament title after suffering a 6-2 loss against 32nd-ranked Bulgaria. Spain ultimately won the title with a 6-2 win over Bulgaria on the final day of action.

Standings after five games:

1. ESP 3/6 (24:8)
2. BUL 3/6 (16:8)
3. MEX 2/3 (7:10)
4. TUR 2/0 (1:22)

Spain now advances to the Olympic Pre-Qualification Group B, November 6-9, in Narva, Estonia. They will face Kazakhstan, the Netherlands and Estonia.
