Concussion conference in Zurich

Main sport bodies convene to give answers

The International Ice Hockey Federation, along with FIFA, the International Olympic Committee, and the International Rugby Board will host the Third International Conference on Concussion in Sport on October 30-31 at the FIFA House in Zurich.

Elite members from the medical community will converge on Switzerland to go over the latest data regarding concussions in sport. On the first day there will be a conference with top presenters exchanging knowledge about concussion in sport. The following day, a group of medical specialists will draft a consensus statement on concussion in sport.

The conference will dwell on how best to deal with head injuries when they happen and will reinforce the need to emphasize prevention of such injuries in competition at all levels. The IIHF experienced a total of 15 concussions in the 2007-08-season, an increase over the previous year making the symposium extremely relevant in today’s sport climate.

The worldwide medical fraternity is anxiously looking forward to outcome of the conference for guidance in dealing with the concussions, and the prestigious British Journal of Sport Medicine will publish a special supplementary issue which will include each presentation during the conference in full detail.

The symposium will include the top experts in the field including: Dr. Paul McCrory of Australia, Dr. Karen Johnstone of Canada, Dr. Bob Cantu of USA, Dr. Jiri Dvorak of Switzerland, Dr. Lars Engebretsen of Sweden and Dr. Mark Aubry of Canada to name a few.
