ERZURUM, Turkey – After Group A ended with an Australian title Group B of the 2009 IIHF World U18 Championship Division III opened in Erzurum.

While Turkey is not known for winter sports, Erzurum, 1757 metres above sea level with temperatures of slightly above freezing, is a good place for hockey. It will host the 2011 Winter Universiade.

After the withdrawal of Israel, four U18 teams will compete for the promotion to Division II. After a round robin with three games per team, a playoff round with semi-finals, a bronze-medal game and a gold-medal game will follow.

Iceland and Turkey have done well so far with a pair of victories after two game days.

While Iceland didn't concede a goal in lopsided wins against Bulgaria (11-0) and Ireland (19-0), Turkey beat Ireland 16-4 in front of 2,200 fans on opening day and followed with an 8-4 win against Bulgaria.

Icelander Egill Thormodsson leads all scorers with 10 of his team’s 30 goals. The two top teams will face each other on Thursday in the last round-robin game.
