Host Turkey wins silver after two defeats to Icelanders

ERZURUM, Turkey – Iceland won the 2009 IIHF World U18 Championship Division III Group B and earned promotion to Division II together with the other group winner, Australia.

Iceland won the preliminary round of the four-team tournament by beating Bulgaria (11-0), Ireland (19-0) and Turkey (18-1). After a 15-2 semi-final win over Bulgaria it came to the gold-medal game against the host team Turkey.

The Turks beat all opponents by at least four goals but couldn’t stop Iceland, which won the final game 8-2 in front of 2,500 spectators. Olafur Björnsson, who had a hat trick, opened the scoring after already 45 seconds. With a 5-0 score and three goals late in the first period, the winner could be predicted already after 20 minutes.

While Iceland earned promotion, the silver medals were handed to Turkey and Ireland won the bronze-medal game against Bulgaria, 6-3.

Individual Awards:
Best goalkeeper: Snorri Sigurbergsson (Iceland)
Best defenceman: Serkan Gumus (Turkey)
Best forward: Colin Grimason (Ireland)
