ZAGREB – Medvescak Zagreb won the 2009 Croatian championship after crushing 2008 champion Mladost Zagreb in a best-of-three final with 13-3 and 6-1 victories.
KHL Zagreb took third while HK Sisak finished in fourth place.
The Croatian championship was only a short event with nine games for Medvescak as the club was more focused on the Slovenian championship. In absence of the best teams of the top two Slovenian teams during the regular-season – Acroni Jesenice and Olimpija Ljubljana which played in the Austrian league – the Croats won the Slovenian regular season.
Medvescak beat Slavija Ljubljana 2-0 in the quarterfinals but met Olimpija Ljubljana, this time with the full roster, in the semi-finals and were defeated. Zagreb was in hockey euphoria and 3,000 spectators followed the game between the capital town teams of the neighbouring countries but Olimpija won the series 2-1 and meets Acroni Jesenice in the expected final series.
The big question after the semi-final defeat in Slovenia and the won championship in Croatia is – where’s Medvescak going next season? After Innsbruck withdrew its team from the highest Austrian league, the clubs have been discussing about inviting Zagreb as the fourth foreign team after Olimpija, Acroni and Hungary’s Alba Volan Szekesfehervar.
