LJUBLJANA – Acroni Jesenice defended its title in Slovenia by blanking archrivals Olimpija Ljubljana with a 4-0 sweep in the final series.

The season ended with a final between the two teams which joined the Austrian league in the recent year. And same as in Austria, Acroni Jesenice (6th) was the better team than Olimpija Ljubljana (10th) also at home.

The teams participated in the domestic league with their farm teams but the main teams joined the post-season in the semi-finals.

Those started with a surprise as Olimpija lost the first game to the Croatian participant Medvescak Zagreb, 0-1, but at the end Olimpija won the series 2-1 while Acroni Jesenice beat Stavbar Maribor, 2-0.

Acroni Jesenice won the first two games at home. A 5-2 victory was followed with a thrilling 2-1 win in shootout. Two games in the Slovenian capital followed but Acroni won them both, 2-0 and 2-1, to receive the trophy on Monday night in Ljubljana.

For Acroni, it’s the seventh Slovenian championship. The win also secured them a spot in the Champions Hockey League Qualification.
