KYIV, Ukraine – Sokil Kyiv defended their Ukrainian national championship, by sweeping the Biliy Bars from Brovary region in a best-of-three final.
Although this was Sokil’s eleventh national championship, it certainly didn’t come easy, at least not to start with. The Kyiv club struggled throughout the regular season and finished a disappointing fifth in the Ukrainian league.
Biliy Bars, on their hand, were solid and came in second after league winner HC ATEK, another club from the capital city of Kyiv. But in the best-of-three final the roles were reversed – there was no stopping Sokil as the team ran away with both games; 8-2 and 6-1.
The decider was played in front of 5,000 fans at the Kyiv Sport Palace.
Regular season champion HC ATEK, Kyiv had to settle with bronze medals. ATEK won the best-of-three match-up two games to one, taking the last two games 3-1 and 2-1 after dropping the first, 4-1.
