HERENTALS, Belgium – For the first time since 1998 HYC Herentals have been crowned Belgian champion after a 6-1 win over White Caps Turnhout in game seven. Forward Bjorn Nuyts scored twice for Herentals who led 4-1 after the first period en route to the victory in front of 250 spectators.

The final series went back-and-forth. Herentals won the first two games (5-4; 7-1) but they saw Turnhout come back to tie the finals after four games (6-3; 6-1). The teams claimed home victories in games five and six of the series setting an all-decisive seventh game.

Herentals’ title is the first one in the 21st century after being one of the most dominant Belgian teams in the nineties.

With the victory over Turnhout, the team avenged the loss in the Belgian Cup final against the same team early January.

This season will most likely have been the last in which HYC Herentals played outdoors. If plans go according to schedule the new champions will see a roof installed over their ice rink this summer.
