Romy goes home

Another injury for Swiss national team

WINNIPEG, Canada – The Swiss national team lost another player that was selected to the 23-man provisional roster on December 30. Kevin Romy left the exhibition game against Belarus on Tuesday due to a rib injury, and will travel back to Switzerland.

Romy is the third player from the provisional roster to miss the Olympics due to injury after Martin Gerber and Roman Josi.

Gerber has been replaced by Ronnie Rüeger, who might be the third goalkeeper behind Jonas Hiller and Tobias Stephan. Romy will be replaced by Romano Lemm. Meanwhile, the situation for the Swiss defence remains open.

While Josi didn’t travel to Canada, Goran Bezina is day-to-day with an abdominal injury. The Swiss are travelling to Vancouver with 24 players, but will announce the final 23-man roster on Sunday.

Defencemen Philippe Furrer and Patrick von Gunten will remain with the team as reserve players, and at least one of them will be nominated to the final roster to replace Josi. If Bezina can’t play at the Olympics, both Furrer and von Gunten will make the team.

Along with Romy, reserve players John Gobbi and Paul Savary will also head home.
