RIGA – The Latvian Hockey Federation announced that it extended the contract with its national team coach Ted Nolan for the 2012/2013 season.

The Canadian coach joined the Latvian national team last season and finished the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in tenth place.

The contract was signed for one year and will be extended until May 2014 if Latvia qualifies for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Nolan will also work as a consultant for the U20 and U18 national teams.

The former NHL Coach of the Year will face his first important challenge when Latvia will host one of the three groups of the Final Olympic Qualification in Riga, 7-10 February 2013. The winner of the tournament that includes Latvia, France, Kazakhstan and a qualifier from the Pre-Qualification stage will advance to the men’s ice hockey tournament at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

The other two tournaments of the Final Olympic Qualification take place in Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany – the tournament also including Austria, Italy and a qualifier – and in Denmark where Belarus, Slovenia and another qualifier will play.

In spring Latvia will travel to Helsinki, Finland, for the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship where the team will face Russia, Finland, Slovakia, USA, Germany, France and Austria.
