SZEKESFEHERVAR, Hungary – Fehervar, formerly known as Alba Volan, claimed its eighth consecutive Hungarian title by defeating Dunaujvaros 4-0 in the best-of-seven final.
The team has played in the Austrian league since 2008 and has improved considerably in its second season. On-ice performance improved to sixth place and the attendance improved to 3,051 fans including 1,400 season ticket holders.
The national championship does not come as a surprise as two thirds of the Hungarian national team plays for Fehervar.
Coming out of the Austrian league, Fehervar entered the national stage for the semi-finals where they swept Ferencvaros Budapest 3-0 while Dunaujvaros beat the Budapest Stars 3-2.
Fehervar started the final series with lopsided wins and was only challenged in their last game when Dunaujvaros equalized at three with 11 seconds remaining in the third period before Fehervar won the game in a shootout decision.
Krisztian Palkovics received the Gabor Ocskay Award for the best forward. The award is named after his former Fehervar and Hungary team mate Ocskay, who passed away exactly one year before Fehervar’s eighth title in a row.
