Karpat season notes

++ Karpat could win points in 18 straight games and is ranked first before the ECC break. The team from Oulu won the last game against the Pelicans Lahti 2-1.

 

++ Karpat has taken 33 points in last 14 game and goes into the Christmas break in lead.

 

++ Janne Pesonen has made most goal and points in league (18 + 22 = 40).

 

++ Forward Jari Viuhkola returned to Karpat on December 17th. He played earlier this season in the AHL with the Lowell Devils. Due to a back injury he was off the roster for about 9 weeks and returns now to Karpat.

 

++Karpat has ended the contract with defender Jere Karalahti because his legal problems related to a drug-related arrest.

 

++ Karpat and forward Timo Vertala is no longer on the Karpat roster. He will play the rest of the season for Tappara Tampere.

 

++ Goalie Tuomas Tarkki and forward Hannes Hyvonen were named to the Finnish national team for the December international break.It is Tarkki's debut with the national team. Hyvönen has played about 30 national game during his career.

 

++ Defender Jukka-Pekka Laamanen played his 400th league game on November 30. Forward Tomi Mustonen played his 200th league game on December 3.

 

++ The first line of Kärpät has scored the most points in the FinnishLeague.  After 28 games the line has  94 points: Janne Pesonen (15-19-34), Michal Bros (14-16-30) and Hannes Hyvönen (13-17-30).

 

++Forward Michal Bros scored his 100th point in the Finnish league at the end of November.

 

++  An Espoo court decided that the defender Jere Karalahti will remain detained as a result of drug related offense. He was arrested in early November. The club will make a decision regarding the player's future with the team after receiving full information from the authorities.

 

++ Defender Jan Novak was added to the roster. He played last season with Ak Bars Kazan when they won the ECC.

 

++ Defender Mikko Lehtonen cannot play duing the November break due to a back injury. Lehtonen has been the team's top defender with three goals and 10 assists. Before the November break Karpat has played 21 games and is in second place, three points behind the leader-Pelicans. Karpat has the best home record in the league.

 

++ Defenders Mikko Lehtonen and Jukka-Pekka Laamanen and forward Janne Pesonen were named to the Finnish national team for the November break.


++ Defensmen Jere Karalahti injured his leg on October 25th, and on October 26th Oskari Korpikari received a chin fracture. Both are expected to miss the next few weeks of action.


++ Forward Janne Pesonen is the top scorer in Finnish league after 16 games. He took the top scoring place on October 25th against assat, getting three points. He currently has 10 goals and 12 assists.


++ Defender Topi Jaakola reached the milestone of 300 league games, while defender Oskari Korpikari and forward Antti Aarnio played in their 200th game in the end of October.

 

++ Defenders Ilkka Mikkola and Antti Ylonen and goalie Jaakko Suomalainen returned to the line-up on October 9. With Suomalainen healthy again, third goaltender Mikko Stromberg is no longer on the roster and joined the team Haien Innsbruck.

 

++ Team Captain Ilkka Mikkola was injured in late-September. The team made a contract with Sloavian defender Ivan Majesky through October. He will go to his team, Linkoping, once his contract with Karpat is over.

 

++ Goaltender Jaakko Suomalainen and defender Antti Ylonen are both ijured and will start their season in October. Goaltender Mikko Stromberg has been called in to replace Suomalainen while he is out of the line-up.

 

++ When the ECC begins in January, it will be a reunion of sorts for two of the Karpat players. Kristian Kuusela played last season with Swedish champion MODO, while Ondrej Kratena will meet up against his former Sparta Prague teammates.

 

++ Young defender Toni Kiren joined the team just before the season started. The 23 year old played last season with Heinolan Kiekko (FIN2) and will try to make his break through in the top league this season.

 

++ Karpat has played in the ECC a record three times. Last year was the only season the team failed to qualify for the annual event as HPK Hamennliina won the 2007 Finnish title.
