COLORADO SPRINGS, United States – USA Hockey announced that 11 players have been added to the roster for the 2010 IIHF World Championship, May 7-23, in Cologne, Gelsenkirchen and Mannheim, Germany. In addition, Joe Sacco, head coach of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and a finalist for the 2010 Jack Adams Award as the league's coach of the year, joins the coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Highlighting the additions is defenseman Jack Johnson (Los Angeles), who was a member of the silver medal-winning Olympic team. Johnson has captured the gold medal in the 2005 World U18 Championship, the silver medal at the 2004 World U18 Championship and the bronze medal in the 2007 World U20 Championship.

Other members of Team USA with U.S. Men's National Team experience include defenseman Matt Greene (Los Angeles Kings) and forwards Nick Foligno (Ottawa Senators) and T.J. Oshie (St. Louis Blues).

In addition, Chris Kreider (Boston College), who helped the U.S. to the gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World U20 Championship, will make his first U.S. Men's National Team appearance.

Six players will be making their Team USA debuts, including goaltenders Ben Bishop (Peoria Rivermen) and David Leggio (TPS Turku); defensemen Andy Greene (New Jersey Devils) and Keith Yandle (Phoenix Coyotes); and forwards T.J. Galiardi (Colorado Avalanche) and Tim Kennedy (Buffalo Sabres).

Joe Sacco, who recently completed his first season as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche and is a finalist for the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach, is on the staff of a U.S. Men's National Team for the second time.

Sacco will be one of the assistant coach of head coach Scott Gordon (New York Islanders) along with Todd Richards (Minnesota Wild) and Ron Rolston (National Team Development Program).

Sacco served as an assistant coach for the 2009 IIHF World Championship in Berne and Zurich-Kloten, Switzerland. He helped guide the U.S. to a fourth-place finish, which was the United States’ best showing at the World Championship since capturing the bronze medal in 2004.

In his first year with the Avalanche, Sacco led the team to the Stanley Cup Playoffs following a one-year hiatus.

Prior to working in Colorado, Sacco was the head coach of the American Hockey League’s Lake Erie Monsters for two seasons (2007-09). He also spent time as an assistant coach with the AHL’s Albany River Rats (2006-07) and Lowell Lock Monsters (2005-06).

As a player, Sacco represented the United States on several occasions. He was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team at the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France, and played for the U.S. Men’s National Team on six occasions (1990-92, 1994, 1996, 2002). He was a member of the U.S. National Junior Team at the 1989 IIHF World Junior Championship.
