For the first time in IIHF history a candidacy was supported by one of the highest state representative of a country. President of Slovakia, Ivan Gašparovič, proved that sport has to close, and his personal participation in the 2006 IIHF Congress contributed to the clear success of Slovak hockey diplomacy in the battle to host the 2011 IIHF World Championship. The Slovak candidacy at the IIHF Congress in Riga (Latvia) was identified as the best presentation ever.
