RAPPERSWIL, Switzerland – The ZSC Lions became the first Swiss team to win a major European club competition after winning the inaugural Champions Hockey League. After a 2-2 tie in Magnitogorsk, Zurich won the return game against Metallurg Magnitogorsk 5-0 to dethrone the 2008 European club champion.

Blaine Down opened the scoring at 17:17 and Peter Sejna brought the puck over the line in a power play in the second period. It was again a 2-0 lead after two periods but this time the Lions didn't let the Russians come back and sealed the win with three third-period goals.

ZSC goaltender Ari Sulander was named Champions Hockey League playoff MVP and was the first player to hoist the Silver Stone Trophy.

Zurich has earned the right to represent Europe in the 2009 Victoria Cup against an NHL challenger. Dates, venue and the NHL team will be announced later.

20:00 - The ZSC Lions Zurich take the title! They are the first winners of the Champions Hockey League! 19:00 - One minute remaining in the game. Faceoff in the Metallurg zone at 19:06. 17:29 - ZSC adds another one. 5-0, scored by jean-Guy Trudel, assisted by Blaine Down and Domenic Pittis. 15:00 - Good news for Metallurg, they killed off the penalty. 12:59 - More trouble for Metallurg, another penalty is called against them. 12:33 -  ZSC continues to stay in the Metalurg zone, as the Russians are showing very few signs of mounting a comeback. Meanwhile, the fans have started an early CHL celebration as 'ZSC-ZSC-ZSC' is being cheered throughout the arena. 9:51 - 4-0 for ZSC! In an unbelievable minute of action, ZSC extends their lead to four goals after Jan Alston scores into a virtually empty net after he is left alone at the far side of the crease. 9:28 - Evgeni Varlamov is shaken up on a play and has to be helped off the ice. It looks like he won't be returning as he looks groggy leaving the ice. 8:57 - The crowd goes wild! ZSC takes a 3-0 lead after Seger scores on a rifle of a shot from the point late in the power play. 7:22 - Metallurg' Stanislav Chistov is whistled for a penalty. 5:34 - Plantonov has another solid shot, but Sulander makes the pad save. 5:00 - Once again, both teams have settled into a mid-period rhythm. 1:00 - ZSC kills off both remaining penalties.  Denis Platonov had the best chance late in the power-play but missed the wrap around. 20:00 - Metallurg has one good shot with the five-on-three before the end of the period as Evgeni Varlamov shoots, but Sulander makes the stop and ZSC closes the period up 2-0 with 10 seconds left in the two-man advantage and 59 seconds left in the second penalty. 18:58 - ZSC goes down two men after Seger is called for tripping a big five-on-three chance for Metallurg. 18:09 - Metallurg gets a power-play chance as Severin Blindenbacher is whistled for a penalty. 15:05 - Metallurg tries to cut the lead in half on an odd man rush, but Sulander makes the save and a minor scrum erupts in front of the net. No penalties are called. 14:48 - 2-0 for ZSC! Adi Wichser takes a shot on the power play that somehow bounces its way through the defense and finds its way to the back of the net. Domenico Pittis gets credit for the tip in. The play goes under video review to determine if the net was dislodged before the puck went in. After the review, the goal is allowed. 13:03 - One of Metallurg's top player's Jan Marek is whistled for tripping. 11:04 -  A Metallurg turnover at the blueline is nearly costly, but Proskuryakov makes the pad save on Alston. 10:00 - ZSC misses a chance on an odd-man rush 9:13 - Metallurg kills off the second ZSC power play of the game. ZSC had one good chance with the extra man, a slapshot that went wide. 6:36 - Sulander makes a glove save on Nikolai Zavarukhin on Metallurg's best chance of the period. 4:00 - Both teams playing a balanced to open the second period. 20:00 - ZSC leaves the ice to an ovation from the home crowd. 19:50 - Metallurg nearly scores on a shorthanded breawaway, but Sulander makes the stop. 18:21 - Metallurg's Rinat Ibragimov is whistled for tripping. It is ZSC's first power-play of the game. 17:17 - Blaine Down puts in his own rebound for the first goal of the game. ZSC leads 1-0...the fans are on their feet. 14:20 - ZSC's Adi Wichser has a great shot from the face-off dot, but it is batted away by Proskuryakov who also saves the rebound shot by Seger. 12:30 - A potential breakaway by Metallurg's Jaroslav Kudrna is thwarted by Mathias Seger who tangles him up. Sulander makes the save on the ensuing play in his zone. 11:00 - Both teams have settled down after the first 10 minutes and are playing a very safe game on both ends. 8:52 - ZSC kills the first Metallurg power-play and is back at full strength. 7:00 -  Bring your earplugs, the whistles from the ZSC crowd are deafening as they show their disagreement with the call and the power-play. 6:52 - Metallurg goes on the first power-play of the game after ZSC's Philippe Schelling is whistled for tripping at the blueline. 4:31 - Metallurg gets its first good shot off as Jan Marek shoots at Ari Sulander, who makes a glove save. 2:00 - ZSC is peppering the Metallurg net with shots, but Proskuryakov stays unrattled.
