The game schedule of the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship in Espoo has been released at a press conference in Finland on Monday.

The tournament in the second-largest city of Finland, located about 19 kilometres west of Helsinki, will be the first Women’s Worlds with ten teams following the additions of Japan and France. The tournament will be played from 4th to 14th April 2019 at the Metro Areena. Of the 29 games, 23 will be played at the main arena with a capacity for 6,982 spectators, six will be played at the secondary rink.

As previously with eight teams, the Women’s Worlds will be played in two tiered groups. Defending champion USA, Canada, Finland, Russia and Switzerland will be in the “upper” Group A and battle for a good placing ahead of the final round. They will be joined in the quarter-finals by the best three teams from Group B with the lower-seeded teams: Sweden, Japan, Germany, Czech Republic and France. The two bottom-ranked teams in Group B will be relegated but will play a classification game on 11th April.

The quarter-finals will be played on 11th April 2019 with host Finland playing the 19:30 game at the main arena. The semi-finals and medal games will be played during the weekend of 13/14 April 2019.

Host Finland will open the tournament the first evening against defending world and Olympic champion USA. Prior to the game Canada will play Switzerland while Russia starts on the second day against Switzerland. In Group B Germany-Sweden and France-Japan will be the games on the opening day and the Czech Republic starts on the second day with a match against France.

Logo for a player, by a player

Also the logo of the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship has been presented today. It’s unique because the designer of the logo may as well be a player at the event. Long-time national team forward Michelle Karvinen, who studied graphic design beside her ice hockey career and played in three Olympic Winter Games and seven Women’s Worlds, created and presented the logo today and as Finland’s scoring leader in PyeongChang 2018 will also be very much counted on the ice in Espoo.

In the logo she honours her teammate Riikka Valila, Finnish legend and the first European female player to be inducted in the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2009. After retiring from ice hockey, Valila made a comeback and continues still playing at club level and on the Finnish national team at the age of 45. Her number 13 is now reflected in the shadow formed by the female player’s figure.

Other elements of the logo feature national colors of Finland, Finnish nature and the thousands of lakes in the country.
