DAVOS, Switzerland – Swiss Olympic suspended HC Davos player Dino Wieser for five months and fined him 100 Swiss Francs due to anti-doping violations.

Wieser was tested positive for cannabis after the fourth game of the playoff final series against Kloten on April 7. He will have to serve a five-month suspension starting from May 9, which means that he will miss all pre-season games, including the Victoria Cup exhibition game against the Chicago Blackhawks, and nine league games.

Dino Wieser’s suspension is already the third cannabis case in Swiss hockey in three years – all of them with HC Davos. Jan von Arx was suspended for six months in 2006 and Peter Guggisberg was involved in a cannabis-related case which ended up at a criminal court the same year.

Cannabis was the most common doping violation (six out of ten cases) in Switzerland in the first quarter of 2009 according to statistics published by Swiss Olympic.

“It is annoying and unacceptable,” club president Tarcisius Caviezel said to Die Südostschweiz about the cannabis violation of the former junior national player. Caviezel announced that the player will face a salary reduction and additional – internal – disciplinary consequences.

The 20-year-old had 5 goals and 14 assists in 65 NLA games last season. He also played in the 2008 IIHF World U20 Championship.
