The Swedish Ice Hockey Association announced that Rikard Gronborg will leave the Swedish national team as head coach after the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

Gronborg wants to focus on moving his career to North America with the dream of becoming an NHL coach. He recently led Sweden to back-to-back IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship gold.

During the upcoming season Gronborg will continue with Johan Garpenlov and Peter Popovic as assistants.

Garpenlov, the head coach as of the 2019/2020 season, has worked as Gronborg’s assistant since 2016. Earlier he worked for the national team as a team leader (2010-2012) and as an assistant coach in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He earlier also was on the coaching staff of Djurgarden Stockholm and was a scout for the Dallas Stars.

Before ending his career as a player with Djurgarden in 2001, Garpenlov played 10 seasons in the NHL including 609 regular-season games (114 goals, 197 assists) and 44 post-season games (10 goals, 9 assists) as a forward. He also played for the Swedish national team at the Worlds, Olympics and World Cup and won back-to-back World Championships in 1991 and 1992.
