SOFIA – The Bulgarian hockey community is mourning the death of 21-year-old national team goalkeeper Kiril Vajarov.
Vajarov was stabbed to death early Saturday outside of a nightclub in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia. His friend Vassil Alexandrov, who was celebrating his birthday, was also killed and another man was wounded before the murderer fled in a taxi, according to a police report. The police arrested a suspect on Monday.
The Slavia Sofia goalie was playing at the 2009 IIHF World Championship Division II in Sofia just one week earlier – his second World Championship with the senior team.
