Nurminen will take on the new task along his current job as of June 1st 2012 when the current General Secretary Mika Sulin starts as General Secretary of Finnish Olympic committee.

“To choose a successor to Sulin was easy since Nurminen has been member of the organizing committee of WC the last two years and has actively taken part of the game preparations,” said Ice Hockey Association and World Championship organizing committee Chairman Kalervo Kummola.

Nurminen steps into Sulins shoes at the same time as the organizer responsibility of the two year WC-home games moves over from Finland to Sweden.

“Mika and the whole team have done great job and loads of reparations already for the next spring event,” said Kummola. “Of course there are still loads to do during winter, but now the full concentration is on the home games which start at the end of next week.”

Even if Nurminen takes on the General Secretary tasks already in June, Sulin is still taking part of the game preparations until 1st of October before moving over to Olympic Committee.

“Nurminen knows the game organization and the International Association’s way of working. The transition period during this summer will give us great opportunity to go through this spring’s preparations together with the IIHF and our Swedish colleagues and based on that make plans for the next spring,” said Sulin, who is very pleased about the appointment of Nurminen.

2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will take place in Stockholm and in Helsinki 3-19 of May, 2013. Half of the preliminary games and the quarter finals will be played in Finland (3-15-May 2013). Semifinals and finals will be played next year in Globe Arena, Stockholm while Hartwall Arena in Helsinki will be the game site in Finland as it is this year. Also next year Finland will start their WC-games in front of home supporters as the Swedes start theirs in Stockholm. The other countries teams’ preliminary attendance will be decided based on IIHF World Ranking after this year’s games. The ticket sales for 2013 games will start in autumn 2012.
