STOCKHOLM – Norway rebounded from its overtime loss to the Czech Republic to defeat Italy today 6-2 and move out of last place in the Preliminary Round group. In its most complete effort of the World Championships, Norway’s top lines answered the call. Marius Holtet’s second period goal would prove the winner for Norway’s first win of the tournament. With this Norway’s fourth game of the tournament, the win could not come at a better time. Click here for a video with post-game comments. "Of course it feels good when you score six goals," said Holtet. "That means you have good offensive qualities. We had a little down period in the middle of the game, but if you look at the 60 minutes overall, we played pretty well." At 3:06 of the first period Mats Trygg’s slapshot found its way through several skaters and past Daniel Bellissimo. The goal came just as Italy had killed of a slashing penalty to Giulio Scandella. Italy would answer right back 2:05 minutes later when Luca Ansoldi scored his second of the tournament. Daniel Tudin’s pass found Ansoldi as he was breaking to the net with Jonas Holøs shadowing him. Norway would come back to make it 2-1 sat 16:51 when Patrick Thoresen was credited with a goal that appeared to deflect off Luca Felicetti and into the net. Per-Åge Skrøder and Anders Bastiansen contributed with assists. The lead was widened in the second period as Holtet and Bastiansen scored to make it 4-1. At 4:27 Holtet took a long cross-ice backhand pass from Skrøder and let go a slapshot that traveled high and over Bellissimo for a power play marker. About six minutes later at 10:35 Bastiansen tallied a goal off a nifty move in front. Head coach Rick Cornacchia realized that he had to calm his team down a bit called a timeout. Italian assistant captain Alexander Egger cut the lead in half with a power play goal at 12:35 of the second. Vincent Rocco and Cocquio Trevisago, Italy native Thomas Larkin added assists. Italy had a golden chance to come back when Mathis Olimb was called for tripping and also given a misconduct penalty. With Italy’s power play 1 for 3 in the game, this would have been their chance to bring it back to a one-goal game. Instead Mats Trygg scored his second of the game with a shorthanded two on one effort. Trygg’s slapper glove side extended the lead to three goals. Netminder Lars Haugen picked up an assist. "We had a power play there," said Vincent Rocco. "I thought we moved it around all right, and we had a bad break. It jumped over a guy’s stick in the slot and they go down and he made a hell of a shot to make it 5-2." Skrøder added a goal along with his two assists in the game to cap the scoring at 14:49 of the third. JOHN SANFUL
