HELSINKI – Kevin Romy's goal midway through the third period broke a 2-2 tie and sent Switzerland on its way to a 3-2 win over Belarus. The win was secured by goalie Tobias Stephan who stopped Mikhail Grabovski on a penalty shot with 4:36 left in the game. "We play our style and believe in our system," forward Damien Brunner said. "We have a lot of respect for our opponents, but we're not afraid of them." The win moves the Swiss to 2-0 while Belarus is still winless (0-2). Romy and linemates Simon Moser and Brunner counted all of Switzerland's goals and were dominant all night. In all, they had six points, Moser leading the way with two goals. "It was a good game," suggested Grabovski. "Both teams played hard but we made some mistakes in our own zone." The top line for Switzerland counted two pretty goals in the opening period. On the first, defenceman Félicien Du Bois carried the puck into the Belarus end down the left wing and waited while Moser hustled to the net. At just the right moment Du Bois feathered a pass through, and Moser got just a piece of the puck which eluded goalie Vitali Koval at 6:55. Belarus tied the game on a great play. Andrei Stepanov made a cross-ice pass through the slot to Alexei Ugarov who was left unguarded to the back side of Stephan. Ugarov had only to snap a one-timer quickly into the open side. The Moser-Romy-Brunner threesome scored  the go-ahead goal on a similar play to the first, except this came on the right side instead of left and required one more shot. Brunner took a shot that was deflected in front by Romy, but Koval got his pad on the shot. The puck came right out to Moser, who fired it quickly between the goalie’s moving pads for a 2-1 lead. Incredibly, shots were 19-1 in favour of the Swiss, but they held only a one-goal lead after 20 minutes. This fact was not lost on Belarus coach Kari Heikkilä, who got his troops going strong to start the second. They had several good shots before tying the game on another sensational pass, this time a no-look gem from Dmitri Korobov right onto the stick of Konstantin Koltsov. His one-timer beat Stephan between the legs. The rest of the period was close-checking. The only excellent scoring chance came when a shot dribbled through Koval’s pads, but Roman Graborenko knocked the puck off the goal line to safety. In the third, Belarus had two power plays thanks to penalties to Luca Sbisa, but it couldn't convert. Just a short time later, Brunner pounced on a giveaway behind the Belarus net and slipped the puck in front to Romy. He wheeled from his backhand to forehand and snapped a high shot past Koval in one motion to give the Swiss the go-ahead goal at 7:48. That set the stage for Grabovski's penalty shot, caused by a foul from Sbisa. Grabovski tried a quick deke and shot, but Stephan followed the play and made an easy save. The only blemish on the night was that late in the game Moser's skate caught a rut and he fell awkwardly. He left the ice in pain and didn't return, and is scheduled to have an MRI on his knee tomorrow. Both teams have a day off now. Switzerland plays Finland on Tuesday night while earlier in the day Belarus meets Kazakhstan. "We haven't won the games, but I think we've played well," Grabovski noted. "Tonight we had bad luck a little bit. We still have a lot of games ahead of us, and we have to keep it simple and win." "We wanted to get a good start for the tournament, and now we have a big challenge in Finland," added Brunner. ANDREW PODNIEKS
