Kalervo Kummola Close Biography
Kalervo Kummola was born on November 21, 1945. He has served as an IIHF Council Member since 1998. Kummola worked as Managing Director of the Finnish Hockey League between 1975 and 1987. He has been a board member of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association since 1975, and was elected as Vice President in 1990 and as President in 1997, a position he served for almost two decades until January 2016.
Kummola played hockey as goaltender in lower division clubs in his home town Turku before taking his first job as club chairman at the age of 21. At age 23, Kummola took over as President of Kiekko-67 in the top Finnish ice hockey league, becoming the youngest president of an ice hockey club in Finland. He has been a member of the IIHF Sport Committee from 1982 until 1998 and has served as the Finnish delegate to the IIHF Congresses since 1976. He is Chairman of the IIHF Championship Structure, Championship Bid and Disciplinary Committees. In 1999, Kummola became a Member of Parliament in Finland, serving until 2003.
